FIBA did not fine Turkey for canceling the cheerleaders’ performance during the World Championship, but for singing the team’s national anthem very loud before the games, Turgay Demirel, the Basketball Federation chairman said.
Speaking to the media persons, Demirel said that the media’s statement over fining the Turkey for 3,200 Swiss francs were accurate, but the reasons given by the media was not at all true.
He said according to media’s previous statement the performance of the Red Foxes, a Ukrainian Dance Group was interrupted, during the game between Turkey and Russia on Aug. 29the because of the presence of the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
“It was not due to the Prime Minister’s presence, and FIBA does not have a rule that makes it mandatory for cheerleaders to perform at every game,” he said. “The fine was given because of the noise level of the team’s chants’ and slogans’ being played from the speakers during those games.”
