Is Orams ruling a conspiracy?

The latest chapter in the saga that is the Orams property case was revealed this week. The ruling by the European Court of Justice that a decision by the Republic of Cyprus court to order the demolition of a villa built on ‘Greek Cypriot land’ was valid has sent shockwaves through North Cyprus.

It means that should the High Court here in the UK agree with the ruling, the former Greek Cypriot owner of the land in the North can sue David and Linda Orams for building and using the land and can sue them here in the UK in order to get his compensation.
In a complicated case that only lawyers and judges really understand, - and even then you have to wonder just how much, given that Euro judges were able to arrive at such a controversial conclusion – the ruling could send repercussions throughout the EU.
Of course it is a tragedy that the Orams will have to lose their second home in North Cyprus and that thousands of others who have bought homes on so-called ‘Greek Cypriot land’ will be victims of those prepared to sue individuals for compensation (and again, nothing about the Turkish Cypriots who lost huge swathes of land in the south because this tragedy is not one sided).
Having spoken to some who are much more in the know about these things, it almost seems as if the Turkish Cypriots were out to lose this case for the Orams from day one.
You have to wonder why a top West End firm of lawyers were not given the chance to defend the Orams, given that the EU courts would be involved. Why not go for experts in the field?
Secondly, why were there no objections to the head of the judges ruling in the EU court being from Greece? (Is it at all possible that a Greek judge could be unbiased in this issue?)
And lastly, consider this. If you have elderly relatives living in a home on ‘Greek Cypriot land’ and the former owner comes calling for compensation and cannot claim from your elderly relatives, does this mean they could come after you - and your London home - to seek compensation that way? It is a frightening thought but it seems to indicate this is not such a fantastical idea.
So if you are a fan of conspiracies, this is one to rival Ergenekon. And you can be sure that someone, somewhere has profited from this fiasco at the expense of thousands of property owners, foreign or not, in North Cyprus.
So much for the EU sticking up for human rights and justice.

Events in Greece have shown precisely how being a member of the EU can get you into serious financial problems! Turkey should think twice about joining. Or at least follow the Swiss example who are not full members, yet somehow manage to get loads more money back than they put in!!!

When are people going to realise that the EU is only interested in the EU! Do really want a bunch of unelected bureaucrats telling you how to run your country? The UK pay the EU millions of pounds each year so that they, the EU can tell the Brits how to run their lives. The EU have still to provide a

Seriously, what is wrong with you? What kind of delusions are you suffering from that you think the EU Court of Justice ruling in favor of the legitimate Greek-Cypriot owner of the land is controversial? What legal precedent can you cite from any court ruling anywhere in the world that has ruled in

A lot of rubbish. The Greek Cypriot Judge in Nicosia broke every rule in the book and gave judgement against the Orams without any defence. It is a long story but the fact is that the Court Registry kept the defence waiting for official forums to put in an "Appearence" whilst the judge in the meanti

Why don't the Greek-Cypriots do what the Turkish-Cypriots have been doing? Just take the matter up with the 'Guardian of Turkish Cypriot Properties' in the Republic and get their property back. Oh, its been sold or given to Turkish settlers? That explains why, at the recent 'elections', Turki

To Terry and all, I know history well, that's why I purchased my holiday flat in the south Legally, where lots of Turkish Cypriots live and their property and rights are protected. In the North the 2/3rds majority including 'Eroglu' are illegal settlers from Turkey.

The Orams new what they were doing as do all other buyers of stollen properties in North Cyprus. How would they and other illegal occupiers feel if someone forced them out of their UK home at the point of a gun. The ECJ made the correct judgement but it should have been made years ago.

By:Alan on May 8, 2009

It's simple, the north has been profiteering from stolen property. Dealing in stolen property is a criminal offense. Now the noose is tightening around the neck of the illegal occupiers and the criminals who support them.

The Orams should not have aquired stollen property. This is why the ECJ voted in the way they did.
