THE TURKISH Embassy in London is one of those listed as having thousands of pounds-worth of outstanding congestion charge notices owed to the Greater London Authority.
According to figures from the London Assembly in July this year, the Embassy in Belgrave Square owes at least £75, 810 and is ranked 59th in the list of London embassies owing money.
Other offenders include the Cyprus High Commission, which owes £292,180 and the Greek Embassy, which owes £674,160.
The list is topped by the US Embassy, which owes almost £3.5 million in unpaid penalty charges.
Last week, the London Assembly again urged Mayor Boris Johnson to demand payment from the embassies for outstanding fees and fines for the congestion charge.
A motion agreed by the Assembly urged the Mayor to write to the Head of State for each country refusing to pay the congestion charge and invite Ambassadors to explain their reasons for the refusal.
The motion calls for responses to be published on the Greater London Authority website.
London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon proposed the motion saying “The American and other embassies that dodge payment of the congestion charge are insulting their host city and denying a valuable source of income to Transport for London."
"The congestion charge is not a tax and the vast majority of embassies clearly recognise this. The minority that decide to not follow the rules of this country must now explain in writing how they can justify their actions."
Seconding the motion, Assembly Member Murad Qureshi said: “The Mayor must put pressure on embassies refusing to pay the congestion charge. The United States were happy to pay when the charge was £5 – where were their arguments for not paying on principle then?
“Londoners are being robbed of much needed transport investment because some embassies are choosing to ignore the law.”
The Assembly says some of the worst offenders are the US< Russian, German and Japanese embassies and unpaid fines total £28 million in lost revenue for the Capital.
The Assembly congratulates the 70 per cent of diplomatic missions that do pay the congestion charge on time, however regrets that Transport for London have given up on chasing the embassies that do not pay the congestion charge and leave it in the hands of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to do so.
