Top diplomats at conference

THE CYPRUS Centre for European and International Affairs will be holding a conference on ‘Current Trends in International Relations’ next Monday. Former diplomat at the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Shlomo Avineri, and British High Commissioner Peter Millett will be among the speakers who will discuss new trends in US policy under Obama, and multilateralism as the new diplomacy.

The University of Nicosia’s own Farid Mirbagheri will discuss the ongoing challenge of Iran, while Andreas Theophanous about the next step for the EU, Turkey and Cyprus.

The conference will start at 4.20pm, October 12, at the UNESCO Amphitheatre at the University of Nicosia. For further details, contact 22-841600.

Turkish Cypriots outnumbered?

THE NUMBER of foreigners living in the north is two to three times more than the number of Turkish Cypriots, according to Afrika newspaper. The paper quoted a Turkish Cypriot politician, Mustafa Emiroglulari, as saying that while most European countries have a foreign population of 14-15 per cent, in the north foreigners count for double or triple the number of Turkish Cypriots, making implementation of economic policy much harder.
