Moderate earthquake rattles Cyprus, no damage seen

Cypriot authorities say an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 has shaken the eastern Mediterranean island. No damage or injuries have been reported.
The Cyprus Geological Survey Department says the quake occurred at 8:06 a.m. (0506GMT) Tuesday, 43.5 miles (70 kilometers) off the northern coastal town of Polis Chrysochous at a depth of 19 miles (30 kilometers).

The Department said the quake was felt in the southern resort towns of Paphos and Larnaca, as well as by high-rise dwellers in the capital, Nicosia, about 53 miles (85 kilometers) to the east.

Department officials say Cyprus experiences an average of 8 to 10 moderate earthquakes each year.
