According to Cyprus census, the population has increased with much faster rate. In 2001 there were 689,565 persons while in October 2011 the number is 838,897. The total percentage of increase is 21.7% over the past ten years.
The census began in October and results were declared on December 23 by the Director of the Statistical Service George Georgiou. Gender wise difference is 51.3% women and 48.7% men. Nicosia is called as the most populated city with 38.8% of the total population. Limassole ranked second in the most populated city with 28% while, Larnaca 17.1%, Paphos 10.5%, and Famagusta 5.5%.
Georgiou also said tat the population increased because of increased number of foreigners which is about 21.4% of the total population. This number was 9.4% in 2001census.
